9 players on the Lions' wish list of the 29th pick in the first-round of the 2024 NFL Draft
Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Sports

We made it. It's finally NFL Draft week. The 20204 NFL Draft will kick off in downtown Detroit on Thursday night and the Detroit Lions are currently slated to pick with the 29th pick.

If the Lions actually pick there is a question we'll have to wait till Thursday night to answer, but if they do, we have nine players that would be huge wins if they were taken by the Lions at 29. Here's who's on the wish list:

He just seems like the perfect fit for the Lions. They need more cornerback help and when they pick at 29, he is very likely to be the best remaining cornerback in the entire draft.

McKinstry has lockdown ability. You really saw that last year when teams only threw his way 39 times the entire season. Opposing quarterbacks feared the guy. As a starter he only allowed 56 catches for 557 yards and two touchdowns in two years.

The Lions had a formal meeting with him at the NFL Combine, Brad Holmes went to his pro day and Detroit had him in for a top-30 visit. Lots of interest.

A man can dream. Right now it would seem Thomas is long gone before the 29th pick, but we've seen a million mock drafts over the years and they rarely turn out exactly the way that draft experts think they do. If Thomas falls, for whatever reason, the Lions would be the best landing spot for him.

At 6-foot-4 he's got the perfect size and that 4.33 40-yard dash just can't be overlooked. He can go up and get it in contested situations and he can fly down field. He's the next big thing for the Lions or whoever takes him.

It just seems like another perfect fit. Robinson grew up a Lions fan and really wants to be drafted by Detroit. He's brought it up multiple times already. The Lions need pass rush and Robinson has shown that he can be pretty good at that.

There is some thought that he would be similar to what the Lions have in Josh Paschal, but Robinson is a better player than Pachal immediately if you ask me. He's a day one starter on the opposite side of Aidan Hutchinson.

Personally, I think the Lions can afford to wait until later in the draft to get an offensive lineman, but if Powers-Johnson is there, he's the kind of guy you make sure you take early. He's the best interior option in the draft. and can be a long time starter when the Lions are ready for that.

Powers-Johnson did not allow a sack in three seasons at Oregon. I really don't know how much more needs to be said about his game. He's hard to get past. He only allowed one quarterback hit in that time as well.

Spartan fans are very aware of what this guy can do. If you want incredible catches that you can't believe just happened, Coleman is your guy. He just makes magic happen out there.

He had 58 catches for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns in a crowded Florida State offense last year. Sounds like he'd be great for the Lions crowded offense. A guy that can get the most out of his touches is always good to have.

Coleman has not met with the Lions as far as we know, but he did tell us at the combine that he would be happy to be back in Michigan.

A favorite of ours at A to Z Detroit. Legette has a lot of the qualities that you can get in Thomas and Coleman. He can go up and get the contested catch and he can get down field. The thing that pops in the eye test is his strength to bully cornerbacks off the line and win battles in the air.

He just came out of his shell in 2023 and had 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. There's some concern that it took him a couple years to find his footing, but he looks strong in that footing now.

Another solid cornerback and another solid defensive player from Missouri. They've got a few in this draft. Rakestraw has fallen down the board a bit, but if the Lions didn't take him at 29, they're not likely to see him at 61.

Rakestraw was a lot like McKintry last year. Teams just weren't throwing his way. He was targeted just 28 times all year long. He did let 18 catches happen, but that only resulted in 197 yards and one touchdown.

Do not be surprised if Kneeland sneaks his way into the first-round. He has been climbing up boards for weeks now. If he doesn't go in the first, he's an option in the second round if the Lions move up.

Kneeland's speed and bull rush are a sight to see. He's the kind of player that can sack a quarterback by pushing his lineman into him. There needs to be more moves developed and that's the thing that could keep him out of the first round.

It seems a bit high to be taking an interior guy, but Newton would be a steal for the Lions and we're talking about quite the rotation with Reader, McNeill and Newton.

Newton has a lot of pass rush juice from the middle. He had eight sacks for Illinois last year. But he is also good against the run and that's something the Lions want to continue to be good at.
