Recent 76ers Player Reportedly Claimed By Spurs
USA TODAY Sports

Recently, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that the Philadelphia 76ers signed Mac McClung, and to make room, they waived Julian Champagnie.

Champagnie is a 21-year-old rookie who went undrafted this past summer.

He will not have to wait long to find a new home, as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the San Antonio Spurs have claimed the former Pitt star.

Via Wojnarowski: "The Spurs claimed Julian Champagnie off waivers, source tells ESPN."

Champagnie only played in two games for the 76ers, but he has appeared in 32 G League games this season.

In 14 Showcase Cup games, he averaged 21.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest (while shooting 46.5% from the field).

Meanwhile, he has also played 18 regular season games with averages of 14.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest (while shooting 41.9% from the field).

For the Spurs, adding a young player who has done well in the G League is a smart move.

The franchise is in rebuilding mode, and won't be competing for the NBA Playoffs in 2023.

They are currently the 14th seed in the Western Conference with a 14-45 record in 59 games.

Therefore, the Spurs can spend their time evaluating and developing young talent that could help them in the future.

This could end up being a good situation for Champagnie, because the 76ers (38-19) are a contender (third seed in the Eastern Conference), who is win-now mode which can make it hard for a young player to develop.
